Sanofi Pasteur and the International Longevity Centre UK (ILC) have published a new educational leaflet on “Protecting older people against the risks of influenza”. The leaflet highlights that older adults’ attitudes need to be carefully considered and argues that tackling negative attitudes to immunisation are key to better protecting older adults against the risks of influenza. The leaflet draws on research carried out by ILC last year as part of its Under the skin: Listening to the voices of older people on influenza immunisation report, supported by Sanofi Pasteur.
Key messages include:
• Older people often do not perceive influenza as a dangerous illness nor as a distinct trigger for vaccination.
• They often do not realise that they are generally more vulnerable to disease as they age.
• Their attitudes are often based on a number of misconceptions about the safety and effectiveness of influenza vaccines.
