Mass vaccinations begin following Hepatitis A outbreak in Leeds

In mid-November 2015, around 20 cases of the virus were confirmed in the city of Leeds, which prompted a vaccination programme which targeted thousands of school staff and residents.

Richmond Hill Primary, a school in the affected area, issued a message warning ‘We strongly advise you not to Google search ‘Hepatitis A’ as you may access inaccurate and possibly worrying information’.

Dr Mike Gent, consultant in communicable disease control at Public Health England advised that the most effective measure in preventing the spread of Hepatitis A is ‘practicing good hand hygiene’ after using the toilet, and before or during eating and preparing food’.
