Diphtheria is a life-threatening infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by Corynebacterium diphtheria. It also affects internal organs and/or the skin.In Europe, both diphtheria and tetanus are rare infections due to universal childhood vaccination and regular boosters [ECDC 2013].
A new study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases argues that it “may no longer be necessary to administer booster vaccinations every 10 years and that the current adult vaccination schedule for tetanus and diphtheria should be revisited”. Researchers found that adults remain protected against tetanus and diphtheria for at least 30 years.
Not even astronauts are immune from diphtheria, as the disease is found on the International Space Station
