New simulation demonstrates the effects of herd immunity

Rich Harris, Nadja Popovich and Kenton Powell of the US Guardian interactive team have modeled the impact of herd immunisation on 10 ‘communities’ based on their vaccination rates.

The simulation assumes that a group, composed of the same age cohort, comes into contact with a measles carrier. The simulation, which produces different results every time it is run, then illustrates how even those whom have not been vaccinated can be protected, providing immunisation rates are high enough.
